This time last year we wrote this blog post about kids bedrooms and how to keep them looking stylish for years to come. We had such fantastic feedback from you guys about this that we thought we’d touch on this topic again in a slightly different way for all you parents out there.

This time we’re talking about kids bedroom decor and accessories.

Before you dig into the tips in this blog, make sure you go and read the first one. Everything we mentioned in the last blog is really important for making kids bedroom decor and accessories stand out the way they should!

To recap our stylish kids’ rooms tips:

  • Go for neutral colours and textures for the largest pieces of furniture so that these can be kept year after year as your kids get older and their tastes change.
  • Declutter every year! Kids acquire an astonishing amount of stuff as they grow and change, so make sure you keep on top of recycling and rehoming things they don’t need any longer.
  • Keep lighting subtle and opt for a blackout blind or curtain to help with bedtime! (Check out our other tips on lighting and window treatments here.)
  • Leave as much floor space as possible for changing needs like play areas and extra storage or a desk as they get older.

Wall decor for kids rooms

We’ve talked a lot recently about wallpaper and wall decor and these tips definitely apply in a child’s room.

It’s easy to go bold with wallpaper in a kids bedroom and they will love choosing a statement style with you. There are some incredible wallpapers out there which could really lift your child’s bedroom and personality. One wall or some nice wallpaper panels is enough to add fun and personality

One of our favourite things at the moment is to paint the lower half of the wall a different colour to the top half. This way, if your kids change their favourite colour you won’t be repainting the whole room!

Why keep painting to just the walls? Painting one piece of furniture creates a statement piece while keeping to the mostly-neutral theme and its also a really fun thing to do with your child.

Soft furnishings for kids rooms

If you’re adding some wallpaper, then pick out some of the patterns, textures, and colours from the paper, and add this into your curtains or blinds.

Adding texture to soft furnishings adds depth and warmth to a room so consider this when choosing rugs, throws, and cushions for kids bedrooms. You want your little one’s space to be cosy as well as fun!

Again it is all about balance so if you have neutral bedding, then go for colourful and/or textured throw and cushions. If the floor is plain, add a colourful patterned rug and the same with the walls and curtains.

Kids room accessories

This brings me to the accessories… how much fun can we have here?!  Kids room accessories are where you can get really creative and personal. Each kid has their own unique and special personality, and their room should reflect that!

What are your child’s favourite things? Maybe you can create a fun vignette with their favourite items/toys on a shelf or cupboard. Yes, the room should be mostly clutter-free with toys and clothes in storage, but a few choice items on display will make your kid’s room feel more personal.

Or maybe you can start a collection and create a cabinet to show off their finds? Finding a way for your child to easily and frequently add more character to their room helps them feel more connected to their space and likely to want to keep it looking nice!

The same can be said for wall decals; does your child have a favourite inspirational quote, animal, band or sports team? These are another easy way to add personality to boring white walls without painting.

We love to create ‘accomplishment’ corners where we showcase medals, trophies, artwork and other cool things our kids have done in one area. Even the tattiest painting on a crumpled piece of paper can look beautiful when framed!

Lighting for kids rooms

Don’t forget lighting is still really important. Try and match your lighting with the rest of the theme in the bedroom. If you’ve got a statement colour in your walls and curtains, then maybe add that colour into a bedside lamp.

One of our favourite bedside lamps by Bragg & Co in Marshmallow Pink with the patterned lampshade.

When combining patterns, don’t forget, that you can have a pattern in the lampshade, walls and your curtains as long as they’re different sizes! This goes for cushions too.

Fairy lights are another way to add that cosy, hygge feeling to your kids bedroom and they make some gorgeous designs these days.

So, there you have it. Our styling tips for kids room decor, accessories, soft furnishings and lighting. Now, go talk to your kid and see how you can create a beautiful, fun, cosy space together!
