Whether you have plenty of time on your hands or just want to make the most of those few extra daylight hours creeping in over the coming months, there are so many ways to update your home quickly and easily.

With longer, warmer days and new colours cropping up outside to bring a smile to your face, spring is a great time for a change. So, this spring try these simple home improvements and return a fresh feeling to your home…

Declutter before you start any form of home improvements, this will help highlight what really needs or doesn’t need doing. Go back and read our full blog on decluttering to help you get started.

General Spring Home Improvements

Storage

In your pre-improvement declutter you’ll likely have noticed where mess accumulates most in your home. Can you add more storage here? There are so many different ways to store your possessions these days that you have no excuse for leaving things lying around. Shelves, boxes, drawers, baskets, cupboards and even decorative bowls are great ways to store items big and small.

Add extra shelves to display pretty items that usually hide away in cupboards – think glasses, plates, towels or blankets, and then use the free cupboard space to store the things that you don’t want to see every day.

Plants

The easiest way to brighten up your home in spring is to introduce some new houseplants into your rooms. Head over to your local nursery and pick out the most vibrant blooms and exotic leaves to add colour and life to your home. Rearrange your current plants to accommodate the new ones and create mini indoor gardens in your entrance hall, kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathrooms!

Furniture

There’s no need to go out and buy new furniture for your Spring revamp. Simply rearranging the furniture and creating new areas of space and flow in and between your rooms will transform the space. If you haven’t considered it already, then pull the furniture away from the walls slightly to create flow space and make your room feel intriguingly larger.

Lighting

If you read our previous blog on lighting, you’ll know that at The Home Stylist we are big fans of dimmer switches. Adding a dimmer helps change the atmosphere in your home every day, at different times of day! Adjust it to your mood and enjoy a fresh perspective on your home.

Spring Living Room Improvements

If you feel like your living space could do with a facelift, start small with soft furnishings. What colour palette do you love at the moment? Are there any new pattern styles catching your eye in the shops? A scattering of new cushions will instantly change the feel of a room and will mean you have extra to maybe add to a different room.

To really make the most of spring you could also try swapping out your curtains for something a little lighter and brighter. Frame your windows to invite those spring colours indoors.

If you have a bookcase in your living room, then why not try colour coding or arranging them by height? You might even find a new summer read while you’re rearranging.

Spring Bathroom Improvements

Is your bathroom the sanctuary that you want and need? Change the accent colour of your bathroom with ease by changing a few bathroom accessories and adding a few fun decorations. Towels, toothbrush holders, soap dishes, candles and toiletries are all relatively inexpensive, and you can have fun colour coding from different shops and brands. Add a plant with a tone from your colour palette and your bathroom will feel brand new.

Spring Kitchen Improvements

Take some time to really think about your kitchen space so that you can make it functional as well as beautiful. Take stock of everything you use, then rearrange, add or take away equipment and kitchenware as you see fit. Try and keep your countertops as minimal as possible and consider hanging items like knives, utensils and pots and pans to save space.

In a busy kitchen, even a few new tea towels and mugs displayed nicely can give you that new feeling. Add some fresh herbs in pretty pots and your kitchen will look and smell lovely.

Spring Hallway Improvements

With limited furniture, there often isn’t too much you can change in a hallway, stairway or entrance hall. One thing that always has a place in these areas though is art and photographs. Add new pieces, take some away, rearrange and reframe.

And why not finally frame some of those holiday photos you took last summer? This is a time to make those little changes that you always put off and see a huge difference in the feel of your home.

Spring Bedroom Improvements

Everyone loves the feeling of freshly washed sheets, right? Take that feeling to the next level and update your bed linen entirely. Change the colours or upgrade to a higher thread count and revel in that ‘new sheets’ feeling for months to come!

Finally, if you do decide to paint, then don’t forget to paint a swatch of colour on each of the walls to help see the room as a whole. Go back and look at the swatches at different times of the day to check how it looks in a different light. Plus, don’t forget to look at it at night time with the lights on and off!
