Last year, founder Alex travelled to Paris for Maison et Objet 2018 and discovered 8 interior trends that saw us through 2019. We absolutely loved the bold wallpaper and glamorous velvet textures of 2019.

Interior Trends 2019

This year, with exciting Home Staging projects underway in Hong Kong, Alex watched from afar as Maison et Objet and Milan Design Week shared hints for the interior trends of 2020.

We are happy to see plenty of 2019 home decor trends making their way into 2020, with a few additions that we think can be easily integrated into many different home decor styles.

Here are the 5 2020 interior trends we think you should know about to update your home next year.

Colour Trends for 2020

Last year, we loved all the burnt orange and gem tones we saw at Maison et Objet, and these rich hues are set to stay through 2020 too. But, if we had to pick just one colour for 2020, then it would be green.

Tranquil Dawn & Adeline Green

Both Dulux and Graham and Brown have chosen distinct greens as their ‘colours of the year’, the former going for the pale Tranquil Dawn and the latter for the rich and vibrant Adeline.

How to use it: From our preferred paint brand Eico, we adore the Victorian Green. This timeless colour would make a bold feature wall and looks beautiful with upcycled wood furniture.

Furniture Trends for 2020

There are two 2020 furniture trends that we really love, inspired by two very different interior styles.

The first is curves. Influenced by the geometry and glamour of the 1970s, rounded edges are very in when it comes to furniture in 2020.

We absolutely adore the statement chairs and retro circular side tables that are making their way into living rooms.

How to use it: keep your eye out for a statement chair with beautiful curves. Find a colour that fits your current colour scheme or go all out and go green! One of our favourite Hong Kong Home Decor Shops, Tequila Kola, have plenty of these!

The second furniture trend to watch out for is Vienna Straw. Replacing rattan in the natural materials trend, Vienna Straw can be found in classic dining chairs, as well as coffee tables and even sofas.

We love this one from Red Edition.

How to use it: no need to go out and by a whole new set of bistro-style dining chairs. Instead, find a piece of vintage Vienna Straw and hang it up on your wall.

Texture Trends for 2020

Texture in all its variety is an overarching decor trend for 2020, with mixing textures the best way to create your own unique look.

We love that metal finishings are still in for 2020 and the more mismatched, the better. Mixing copper, brass, gold and wrought iron in your furniture, fixtures and fittings keeps things exciting and allows you to play around with your colour palette.

In the same vein, you don’t need to stick to one kind of wood either. Contrast dark and light wood in your home and keep continuity by matching the tones to the rest of your colour palette.

Finally, think outside the box when it comes to the natural materials in your home as bringing nature in is another interior trend that is here to stay. We’ve already discussed wood and straw details but think outside the box with terracotta, coral and plenty of plants.

One of the easiest ways to incorporate more green into your home is to add more plants. There is nothing nicer than a healthy collection of plants to brighten up a home.

International Style Trends for 2020

Love for Japanese aesthetic has been around for a long time in interior design, especially for those with a love of minimalist design. In 2020, you’ll want to learn the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi to influence your interior.

Wabi-Sabi is the understanding that all things in life are incomplete, imperfect and impermanent, and for home decor, this is translated into rustic, natural materials and adaptable layouts.

How to use it: we love the idea of looking at home styling itself with the lens of Wabi-Sabi. That is, to realise that your home may never be complete, but that adding to it, adjusting it and taking things away is what ultimately creates your imperfectly perfect home.

We hope you enjoyed our take on the interior trends of 2020 and we hope you got some ideas for how to bring a little green, a lot of nature and some gorgeous curves into your home!
