We’ve been talking about lighting and accessories in various forms over the last few years. We talk about lighting at least once in every blog post and have blogs dedicated to nothing but lighting and all about accessories.
Whilst I’ve been spending a lot more time at home I, for one, have definitely been moving accessories, art and lighting around. There is no such thing as a finished home, after all.
So, this month’s blog we want to give you some more tips on how to get the best out of your lighting and home accessories.
Home Lighting Tips 2020
Let’s start with lighting. Lighting is so incredibly important as it creates the whole mood of the room. It’s much more than just one overhead bulb in the centre of the room!
We’ve talked about Task, General and Accent Lighting in the past but today we’ll be giving you a few tips on Table Lamps and Chandeliers.
How to Style Chandeliers
We often get questions about chandeliers as they can add that bit of drama to your dining room.
The one thing to remember is that chandeliers often don’t give off a lot of light, so we would also recommend adding lamps to your dining room. If you have the space for some lamps on a sideboard or a standing lamp in the corner, then you can balance your task and accent lighting with the dramatic chandelier.
We recommend that the height of the chandelier should be at least 76 – 91 cm above the table and you need to make sure that you can see the person on the opposite side of the table!
How to Style Table Lamps
Now, you may or may not have gathered that THS are particularly fond of a table lamp.
In particular, the fabulous glazed, ceramic coloured lamp bases in double-gourd, onion and ginger jar styles from award-winning designers, Bragg & Co. They really do add something special to a room. If you browse through our new Staging Portfolio, you’ll see what we mean.
Table lamps can be used for both Task and General Lighting. The more lamps you use, the more general light will fill the space and you can play around with positioning to get the effect and mood you desire for each room.
Table lamps are also a great way to define the space in your room or, as we sometimes call it, zoning. Two lamps can help ‘frame’ and zone off a particular space in an open-plan room. For example, either side of a sofa, or you can use different, complementary coloured lamps to zone different spaces.
With the right shade, table lamps also add a real pop to a room when they aren’t on. We’ve been making our handmade THS lamp shades for over a year now and we love how each one is unique in shape, design and colour, perfectly suited to each space.

How to Style Lighting with Accessories
This leads us onto styling home accessories and how they can be used to add personality to a room, especially alongside table lamps.
If you’ve seen any of our recent staging projects we’ve added a couple of accent pieces next to a lamp to create a beautiful vignette.
Accessories can really bring a room together by balancing colours and textures.
When thinking of what colours to add to your vignette, have a look at your art or the view from your window. Use these colours to accessorise your room to create visual harmony between all your decor. Odd numbers are also a key format for a visually appealing scene.
Of course, when styling with home accessories, you must be careful not to clutter! Here are our tips for decluttering and styling with accessories.
