It’s that time of year again where we start to take a look ahead and get excited for a whole new year of home styling projects and home decor trends.
Last year, we talked about how creating a beautiful, tranquil home had become more important than ever since coronavirus came into our lives. While we’ve all rejoiced over finally getting out of the house and back into public spaces, the feeling of home as your safe haven will stay with us well into 2022 and beyond. So, how can we make your haven the most beautiful, happy space it can be in 2022?
Let’s take a look at the latest home decor trends for inspiration…
Home Decor Trends 2022
It’s all about those curves…
In our 2020 style trends blog, we shouted about curves and they are here to stay in 2022. Circles are the softest of geometric shapes and we love that furniture with rounded edges can bring a modern edge that still feels cosy and warm. In fact, studies have shown that circles really do make us happier than other shapes!
How to use it: This look is perfect for a casual dining area or living space. Combine curved chairs with a circular table, lots of round decor and then set it off with more angular artwork. Or if you’re looking for that accent piece, add a round mirror, round tray to your ottoman, or maybe even a round/oval drinks trolley!
Let’s go retro…
When were circles hotter than ever? The 60s and 70s! Home style trends from these eras have been making a comeback for some time and in 2022 it will still be all about retro furniture. As well as rounded shapes, think leather, velvet and rattan in rich, vibrant hues.
How to use it: Furniture designers have been trying to recreate retro and vintage furniture for decades, but there is nothing like the real deal. Get yourself to a second-hand store or keep an eye on eBay for some original gems from the 60s and 70s. There are some great pieces out there…. We’re particularly fond of the Marcel Breuer Cesca dining chair.

Decor Trends for 2022
Speaking of rattan…
It’s not just about retro rattan furniture, but rattan everything. The trend of bringing nature into your home is definitely still a hot home trend for 2022 and that means lots of natural materials like rattan.
What we love about this trend is that it can be achieved with decor on a small scale or on a larger scale with statement furniture.
How to use it: Keep an eye on rattan pieces with curved edges and circular shapes to hit multiple trends. Have a look at some ‘vintage’ Lloyd Loom furniture, have it resprayed to a colour/tone that works with your home.
Natural inspiration…
Natural materials, natural colour palettes, plants galore and floral patterns are all staying firmly in our homes in 2022. Whether it’s adding green into your colour palette or choosing rattan over plastics and metals, try to take inspiration from nature when making your home styling decisions in 2022.
And why is this a style trend that is here to stay? Just like circles, it is proven that time in nature makes us happy! So bring the outside into your home.
How to use it: No matter what your aesthetic is, whether modern, retro or traditional, plants and flowers are always a winning decor item and there are so many unique ways to incorporate nature into your home.
Make upcycling your new hobby…
Crafting and DIY became hugely popular over the course of the pandemic when people felt the desire to improve their homes and had the time to do so. With retro furniture and more sustainable style choices being in vogue, it makes sense for upcycling to stay on trend too.
Even if you have less time now you are back in the office, the sense of accomplishment you’ll have for the pieces you upcycle will be worth the effort and make you feel even more connected to your home.
How to use it: After finding that retro piece of furniture, give it some love with new upholstery or a lick of paint.
If you really don’t have the time or care to do it yourself, you’ll still be winning by getting a professional to do it for you! Get in touch if you have a piece of furniture you’d like us to help you upcycle.
Colour Trends for 2022
The home decor trends we look forward to seeing the most each year are the colour trends.
Tying in with the nature trend, Dulux, Graham and Brown, and Farrow and Ball have all picked blue hues inspired by nature: Bright Skies from Dulux, Breathe from Graham and Brown, and Stone Blue from Farrow and Ball.
From our go-to paint brand Eico paints, we love these hues below, which definitely have a retro vibe.
They also remind us of the colours of our new favourite retro home decor item, the Gluggle Jug. We love the ones from Olivia Bonas – definitely retro!
How to use it: At The Home Stylist, we like to keep walls neutral but use colour in furniture, art and accessories. Doing so means you can pick and choose the colour trends you love when it suits you without having to restyle your whole home! So, if you love the new colours of the year, incorporate them into your decor.
At The Home Stylist, we have a team of artists who can take the colours from your favourite paint samples and create a bespoke piece of art just for you, like this one below using the Eico Paint colours.
Space Planning Trends for 2022
Last but certainly not least, is how to use your space in 2022. If you haven’t already added a home office, then now is the time to do so. Whether you are back in the office, working from home, a full-time mum, or even retired, we believe a functional and inspiring desk space is important for everyone.
How to use it: This has been one of our busiest areas of the business this year, creating and helping people organise their space better to fit in with their changing needs and requirements for the home. Your home office, or quiet desk space, needs to be inspiring, needs the right light, and certainly needs to be uncluttered! Book a virtual styling appointment and our stylists could help you find the right solution for you in just one session.
